The SVE/SVJ/RSR/RSQ were capable of shortcut multiplication (it would count up when multiplying by 1-5, but roll around backwards 0->9->x for numbers 6-9, also automatic decimal point management). The SBT (back transfer) shown here, SRW (square roots) and SRQ (square roots and squaring), then the SVE/SVJ (shortcut multiplication and automatic decimal point management), followed by the RSR and RSQ (rebranding/refinement of SVE/SVJ which were recalled due to a driveshaft prone to pending) were, feature-wise, the pinnacles of the design. There's a pretty direct link between this machine and its 30 year predecessors, the A, B, and C models Friden's "Roto-Flow" drive was there since the beginning, and the multiplication, division, square rooting and squaring functions were all just elaborations on the basic add and subtract functions. I've collected virtually every patent Friden ever obtained, and what's most remarkable is how much mileage they got out of the same architecture.
